Jacob Oestreich's MASC PageOsmium (Os)Atomic No#: 76Mass No#: 190.23[1] Osmium is a hard blue-grey metal in the platinum family. It is the densist natural element.[2] Osmium was discovered by Smithson Tennant in 1803. The word Osmium came from the Greek word "osme" which means smell.[3] The melting point of osmium is about 3 000°C and its boiling point is at about 5 000°C. It has a density of 22.5g per cubic centimeter.[4] Osmium is used mostly with other metals from the group platinum. For example osmium is mixed with platinum to make the alloy used in implants such as pacemakers and replacement valves.[5]
